Yarden Skop is a PhD researcher. Her dissertation research will explore relationships between digital news and journalistic publishers and large platform companies, using case studies in which machine learning is used to automate content moderation and fact checking. She uses mixed methods, combining ethnography with digital methods, algorithmic auditing and interface analysis.She holds a research M.A. from the University of Amsterdam in New Media and Digital Culture.

Before starting her graduate studies Yarden was a journalist in Israel for more than a decade. In her last role she worked for Israel’s most renowned newspaper, Haaretz, and was part of  building its news desk digital strategy. She was an investigative reporter and an education correspondent. Prior to that she was head of the news desk and front page editor.

Yarden has also worked extensively with grass roots organizations within Israeli media. She was the co-founder of Israel’s women journalist association, promoting representation of women in Israeli media, and was a consultant for  an online independent media outlet run by women, assisting with their digital crowdfunding strategies.

She is still a consultant, working with NGOs on issues of policy, online harassment and radicalization.
