Workshop “Achievements and Challenges in creating a Virtual Garfinkel Archive”
Friday, 10 December 2021, 16:00 - 19:00

The Harold Garfinkel Archive contains thousands of manuscripts, hand-written notes, annotated materials, correspondence, and audio and video recordings that Garfinkel produced over his 70-year career in sociology, as well as materials generated by his contemporaries. The sheer volume and variety of media, their (material) composition and complexity poses challenges for classical archivists and the field of digital humanities alike. Garfinkel’s work and working practices, and the practical reflexivity of ethnomethodology, require creative and new ways of processing, indexing, organizing, displaying and thinking about a virtual archive of his materials. Within the collaborative research center 1187 „Media of Cooperation” three associated projects working on the “Media of Praxeology” are participating in this process: “The ‘Discovery Procedures’ of Science and Technology Studies” (P01); “History of audio-visual sequence analysis as a methodology” (P02); and “Digital Tools and Environments for Research” (P03).

The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum in which members of the three projects working to create a virtual archive within “Media of Cooperation” can share information, reflect upon practical problems and potential (technical) solutions, elaborate ideas, and develop a framework for collaboration going forward. Participants will be invited to present their projects, to reflect on past and current achievements and challenges and cooperatively establish an agenda for the future.
