Bee, Julia, Prof. Dr.

Since March 2024, I have been Professor of Gender Media Studies with a special focus on diversity at Ruhr University Bochum. From 2022-2024 I was Professor of Media Aesthetics at the University of Siegen and from 2016 to 2022 Junior Professor of Image Theory at the Bauhaus University Weimar, with stations as visiting professor at the Free University of Berlin (2020), University of Vienna (2016) and as Mercator Fellow in the CRC Media of Cooperation (2020) as well as postdoc in the Research Training Group The Real in the Culture of Modernity (2016). Before that, I was a research assistant at the Institute for Media and Cultural Studies at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (2009-2016), including in the VW Foundation project "Wiederkehr der Folter?", in the media studies sub-project. I also completed my doctorate at HHU (2015), supervised by Reinhold Görling and Andrea Seier (University of Vienna).

Intersectional approaches and gender media theory are central to my research. With these perspectives, I also look at the climate catastrophe, which massively reinforces inequalities. My current subjects are documentary and ethnographic films, TV series, vlogs, installations, literature and mobile media practices such as cycling. Feminist, anti-racist, anti-Semitic and anti-ableist perspectives play an important role.

I research method development as well as experimental and creative research processes. Mediation and cooperation processes between science and society are close to my heart.

In teaching, it is important to me to promote all talents and to create a culture of recognition, resonance and collaboration. I have studied teaching methods intensively and am working towards a non-discriminatory teaching and learning culture.
